UAV Project

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007 by Scott

What do people do for fun? Well to keep my brain interested I’ve been designing and building a smallish Unmanned Aerial Vehical (UAV). The plan is to make a big RC plane with 3 m wingspan, a weedeater engine and then put a camera in it … and then put a GPS based auto pilot in it (and I’m counting on Ian to show me the way). It should be an interesting problem to work through. I have a large (just under 2 m) wingspan trainer (needing less than one hour to be ready to fly) so i’ll use that in the first instance and then move up to the bigger plane … weeeeeeeeeeeeee

Any comments thoughts ideas?

Otherwise spring is coming wiht the soft leaves already out, the last of the daff’s finishing off and just that sense of real fecundity in the air. Leigh and I planted 5 plots of about five square meters each of mixed wildflowers with the hope of seeing which ones work the best. We did it in the little triangular bit down at the bottom. i’ve been spraying and beating back the weeds for a year or two. We’re trialing three differnt ideas, tweo of mixed wildflowers and one of mexican daisies as a possibel contenders.

What is the news of you the dreat unwashed>?

Tales from the Empty Nest

Yes…I now have my couch back!! Viv has removed the years of popcorn from it and turned the cushion so Tim’s buttock marks are in the back…and I have the remote!! (Now to learn how to use it.)….hahahahah

Tim is established at St. Cloud State University; home of the fighting Huskies. He seems pretty happy…has a friendly roomate who is in the aviation program; Amy’s room is in the same dorm; the food court is across the street; but he hasn’t told us anything about the classes he’s taking….he loves the workout facilities, though. Vib has a full rendition of our trip up there on her blog (Viv of all trades)….Incidentally I promise never to create a blog, because never in my wildest dreams could I think of doing this every day).

We heard from Brady today. He’s doing well, in Talgar, Kazakhstan, about 40 km from Almaty. Living with a young couple (in their 20’s) wuith 2 little kids…he likes them a lot. The food is a mixed learning experience (lots of borscht…he likes that…but also organ meats…less enthusiasm). No internet yet in Talgar, but hopes to be on-line in a week or so, but he has a cell phone and as of today, we can converse via Skype and other exotic techniques. He may not use his blog (unless he makes it private) cuz the Peace Corps is twitchy about blogs. Of course a great deal more info exists on Viv’s blog (second commercial in 2 paragraphs).

Cheers.

Snow to Surf

Just a quick update for you northerners. Sam and I had a rush of blood to the head and sunday morning decided to go skiing at Rainbow! It was perfect spring skiing conditions with HOT weather, sun and slushy snow. While the snow could be better you cannnnot beat a day in the mountains, good company and some fun. I’m sooooo sore.
