Jan. 4th Rotorua

Posted on January 3, 2004 by Shelley

Hello again! Sorry that we have fallen behind in updates. I did try at New Years, but we were having computer trouble at Scott’s, and then we left for Wellington on the 1st, where, in typical government – town fashion, EVERYTHING closes down until after this weekend! Anyhow, we are in Rotorua now with a computer at our motel so I will catch you all up!
On the 27th, we drove from Nelson to Motueka, where we booked a place in Golden Bay for the next night. We then headed across the Takaka hill, a very steep, windy, nausea inducing hill! Luckily we all dosed up on gravol and made it without incident. We went to a cave tour, and saw beautiful limestone formations, and stalagtities and stalagmites. We also went to the place where Chetwood Forest was filmed – the scene in LOTR when the hobbits are first fleeing the Shire. The next day we drove again over the hills to Golden Bay where we had a great stay in a “backpackers” – read small hostel, and explored the beaches etc. We went out to the end of the Sout Island – Farewell Spit and cape farewell, where captain Cook bade farewell to New Zealand after his first voyage here.
I will have to finish this later as there is someone waiting for the computer!
