I don’t know if any of you have actually NOTICED that behind the scenes of the weblog you are reading right now, is other computer. What you see in the address bar is probably something like “http://members.shaw.ca/iwilliamson….”, right? That’s Shaw’s standard webserver that every one of their cablemodem customers gets an account on. Well, all the cool stuff that POWERS this blog is on my home machine, currently known as singularity.homedns.org. The website there isn’t very special right now, because no one usually sees it.
I like the way it is set up, because the Shaw website is always available…sadly, I shut down the home machine on occation (not very often though; usually when someone is sleeping in the guest room/office).
Anyway, I digress. In the interest of being a real geek, and after 14 years on the internet (that’s right, since 1990), I finally went out and got my own domain name. Most people will never know, or care, what that means, but let me explain it to you this once. From now on (well–actually about 48 hours from now), the computer that is in the office and currently called “singularity.homedns.org” will be known as “www.squids.ca”. I own the rights to “squids.ca”, so I can do whatever I want with it.
Want an email here? Sure, how about “giant@squids.ca”.
Want to set up your own web site? Sure, how about, “http://tiny.squids.ca”.
Whatever! I have the power!
This is a truly geeky thing that perhaps no one cares about, but it’s kinda like having a real identity on the internet. Having been here so long, I feel I deserve one…
I’ll leave it to you to figure out why “squids.ca” — Yes “squid.ca” was taken, but why cephalopods at all?
