Update From the Antipodes

Posted on June 24, 2006 by Scott

Howdy all. If Terry can do it I can do it! So lets see what the heck has been going on.

Now of course its winter here. We’ve been having a few weeks of very cold (well for us very cold) wx and some snow in part of the coutntry. In fact, there are parts of the south island that have been without power for almost 10 days due to the snow. Here in Nelson its just been cold hard frosts in the mornings. Actually feeling a lot like a winter day in Canada …. Nice. Sadly I still have to mow the lawn every couple or three weeks!

The bee mite verroa has been discovered in the area. We’d hoped to to keep the south island verroa free but it seems its not to be. Its certainly not the end of the world but it does mean 2-3 years while the wild hives die off that are the worst as there is a greater chance of losing hives. Its just a pain in the ass but does not effect the honey at all as it just effects the bees themselves. So today I’m going to be testing for the mite. Oddly it involves coating a few hundred bees in icing sugar. True!

I’ve just come back from a week long course on senior leadership in the public service. It was very very good with speakers and trainers brough in from England and Australia. Its given me a whole new perspective on my role and how I’ll go about it. They now track us for a year and see how we go back in our day jobs.

I’ve also bough a new radio controlled airplane, an Erasor 60. Its a slope soaring plane …

Pictures as the come to hand.

Excellent! Another goading for my scrapbook! I had been watching and seeing that it was getting pretty cold there. 1 C right now. We’re looking at 27 tomorrow. Ha ha!
