Heads up!

Posted on August 28, 2006 by Ian

Just a heads up to the family that Joan is going in for her cateract surgery as I type this (Monday morning).  She’s getting one eye done today and the second one tomorrow and MAY be staying at our house during that time.  If your trying to call and she’s not there, try us.

She’s now back from the first surgery. I haven’t spoken with her, but Shelley quoted her with “Piece of cake”.

The first eye is done and seems fine. I’m really impressed with how simple it seems to be. It’s literally a 30 minute procedure, no bandages, patches or anything. The only side effect that Mom told us about was her eye hurt because they were still dilated from the medication and the light was too bright. Well, that, and the fact that the new lens was also “corrective” so she needed glasses for one eye and not for the other. Annoying and uncomfortable I’m sure, but no big deal really. Her eye wasn’t even that bloodshot. Cool!
So anyway, she’s in again right now having the first eye assessed then getting the second one done. When it’s all over, she won’t have to wear glasses (reading glasses only), and gets the side benefit of built in UV protection!

Everything wen\’t fine today, though her eyes weren\’t working exactly properly yet. Just adjusting to the new prosthetics and dealing with the all day dilation! So, she says she can see long distances pretty well now, but close is a problem. That was expected. She\’ll need reading glasses now.
She\’s at home tonight (and was last night) and tomorrow is her final checkup for the week, then she\’s on her own for a month or so when they check on her again.
