Yes, there hasn’t been much traffic on The Squid lately. Personally, I’ve been alternately busy, or just bored and not feeling like it…sorry. Anyway, I’ll give a brief run down of what’s been going on here:
- I’ve been trying to finish the bathroom. There really isn’t much left but “finishing and painting, but now that it’s usable, the drive seems to have gone out of the project again. Today, I’m patching drywall, last week I installed the glass shower doors, and the week before I installed a new vanity, counter and taps. Hopefully I’ll be done in a couple week at the latest.
- Dylan has a girlfriend now, so we hardly ever see him between work, snowboarding and “hanging out”.
- Quinn had an exciting couple weeks. First we did a bit of a panic job on a school science fair project, entitled “Aerodynamic Shapes”, then he was selected to take it to the Calgary Youth Science Fair, so we had to redo it properly! It WAS kinda fun. We built a rudimentery wind tunnel and measured how far objects got pushed by the wind. And used that as a measure of the drag. It worked out quite well and he ended up getting a bronze medal.
- Shelley has quit her job at the clothing store. She’s just tired of it and looking to get into something else, or taking a break for a little while — not really sure right now.
Also, since my stomach has been so nasty lately, I HAVE STOPPED EATING GLUTEN. Which brings me to a question for you, Scott. Are you avoiding GLUTEN or WHEAT? There IS a difference. Shelley has always tried to avoid gluten, so I’m just going to be joining her in that endevour. So THERE!
Ian .. gluten is a protein found in wheat barley and rye. Its the stuff that causes bread to fluff up. Good old western canada number 1 red spring wheat has no less than 18% gluten. So you are avvoiding gluten AND WHEAT and BARELY and RYE! I’ll send you a little booklet that outlines it. Also get on the dang internet and look it up …. I ate a curry last night that was thickend with wheat flour (ubnkown to me0 and a slept poorly and felt bloated!
GO QUINN!
Oh so when you look at things rice and spuds are okay, bread buns, rolls pastery, most cereal (other than rice) totillas (other than pure corn ones) and anything that has on the lable “wheat” is OUT .. fresh fruit, veggies protein (meat) a LOT of fast food has gluten in it … apples do not …..
I’m not sure about beer ……

Why is my comment awaiting moderation ……… what the F7*K is that all about?
Only the user name “Scott” is cleared for unmoderated comments. “The Aged and Sexy” part just doesn’t compute!
Hi Scott: yes we know what gluten IS, but you can avoid wheat and still get gluten – oats for example, as well as the barley and rye. Beer is an absolute no no, however wine is fine, as is all distilled liquor – apparently the distillation process removes the gluten. So you can continue to distill endless amounts of vodka in your garage! Fast food is awful, but you should be okay with the fries. Another thing to watch is ice cream – often thickened with a flour mixture. I would suggest checking the ingredients, and you should be able to find a couple of supermarket ones that are gluten free. Cheap places like DQ or Mac’s are not a good idea, but real Italian gelato should be fine. Ian is convinced he cannot eat anything, but I have survived fairly well! I spent today baking gluten free brownies and cookies for him – wouldn’t want him losing too much weight!! Try looking up a celiac sight for NZ – the North American ones are very good about listing gluten free products and where to find them.
For a thickener in lieu of flour try cornstarch or potato flour.
