I got this email from Scott last night — It’s all I’ve heard, but Sam confirms Scott is okay:
Last night I lost control of the pug, spun went into a deep ditch
at 80 km , hit a culvert, rolled end ti end twice and landed on the
roof. I was out of the car in 2 seconds and have nothing but a nasty
bruise on my hip, some scratches and a up to date tetnus shot to show for
it. The car I fear is written off ….I got a ride an an ambulance, met all the local police and fire people ….
Oh I broke my glasses …
Really I’m sore, a bit stiff but will be back in the saddle tomorrow .
Sam has already lined up three possible replacements.
Jeez boy, even in Alberta they learn to aim for that line thats painted on the middle of the road……..sorry about yer glasses, but glad that yer head is intact…..get some ice on yer neck for the next few days, cuz the whippin about that you had will inevitably lead to some degree of cervical strain….phew, those pictures of yer car are wild….(actually, we’re of course thankful that you’re ok)
My goodness, I’m amazed and happy that you came out of that mess relatively unscathed.
I’m feeling much better today, the bruising has gone down(now just a dull yellow), the neck is a bit stiff (you were right Terry) and there is some swelling on the hips (not attibutable to cheese cake). I was suprised at how “out of sorts” I felt and how it impacted on my energy levels. i’ve just been TIRED!! Anyway the insurance claim was accepted new glasses have arrived and all is coming right. I’ve gently gym’ed twice this weekend and the sauna at the gym really helped. I should have gone earlier. We test drove a 2006 ford focus zetec on Friday that we both really like so i’ll go do a bit of discussion with them this morning …
Perhaps new car photos soon!
A little more information: delayed by email problems on Scott’s end:
So here is the story.
You know the Moutere Saddle (just up from Redwood Cellars)? Right at the top a Land cruiser was pulling out of the forestry road on the left across traffic to head towards Nelson (I was going to Motueka) he was slow in getting across so I drifted wider in my lane and as I rounded the corner the back end just let go, it felt like a blow-out but I suspect it was gravel dragged onto the road by logging trucks. I was doing about 80 kph and it was two fast fishtails and into the deep drain on the wrong side of the road. It would have just been a bumpy end but there was a culvert (i.e. a wall of dirt and concrete) that I hit, flipping the car end for end twice ending on its roof (see new picture).
To me it was just BANG BANG BANG (thinking all the while “this is going to hurt”)..
All I could smell was smoke (from the airbags) so I unhooked my seat belt and slithered out the passenger side window (that was shattered) and stepped away. Strangely I found my glasses in the middle of the road about 10m away, bent and with one lens missing. A car stopped and we flagged down traffic (as the car was lying right across the road .) until the horde of rescue people arrived, ambulance, police and fire crews. I was inspected, detected and asked the same questions over and over … given I had a very sore hip (from the seat belt and I suspect the collision with the ditch) I was off to the hospital for another once-over (after waiting 2 hours), more prodding and a tetanus shot. Once home I had a panadine and a LARGE whiskey and slept like the dead waking (at 10 am) very very stiff and sore with some AMAZING purple bruises but otherwise unhurt. My hip and leg already feel better and I’m much more mobile than I was last night.
