I got the call up to the big leagues today. My blood type matches someone, and the donation is going to go ahead soon [Ed: Dates removed according to privacy policy]. Work ups start next week. Now the BIG problem:
How do I want to do it? The 1) Bone Marrow Donation Technique or the 2) Apheresis Technique.
Terry has suggested that Option 1) as the tried and true method with fewer short and long term issues…but it’s also the most painful. Option 2) is relatively painless. I’m leaning towards Terry’s suggestion and have only a day or two to decide so they can start the physical work up. What do you think? Quickly now! If it was you, which would you pick?!
Ian – good on you boy! Personal choice .. go for number 1 .. its mechanical, does the job and you get out the other side faster ….
I’m with Scott…fewer side effects. BTW–who is that unmasked man. There’s a strong family resemblance there, isn’t there!!!
Of course, I already voted, but I still say number 1…what Scott said is right……..
As I said, I’m leaning that way too…I guess that’s what it’ll be….Shelley abstained!
Done. Bone Marrow Donation it it.
Good lad! I’m impressed by this selfless act! Bloody good!
Even though it’s too late to vote, I would agree with Scott and Terry. The pain is short term but unknown long-term side effects are forever.
Ian, could you please e-mail me info for Terry (and for me, too) about making posts on your blog? Terry doesn’t know where the info is, nor his password. I think he’s like to initiate a post from time to time.
I sent you directions. Let me know you got them!
I too think the “old fashioned” way is best – I didn’t really abstain. I did tell Ian that I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of exposing oneself to drugs about which the long term effects are unknown. Won’t do Ian any longterm harm to be in a bit of pain! I keep reminding him that i survived childbirth with NO drugs, never mind general anaesthesia. Anyhow, I am very proud of him, as are all the people I have told about this. I think he should get to be a superhero now! I am especially looking forward to letting Janelle’s parents know( Dylan’s friend whose sadly fatal illness spurred Ian to register in the first place.) There have actually been 15 matches now from that one drive!
