Last night my home weather station recorded a -40 C windchill. Nice. Ambient temperature has been between -35C and -30C today. Yuck. I’ve noticed that Brady has had that kind of weather for a while now. Yuck again.
And…Shelley just phoned me to tell me one of our kitchen pipes has frozen up. We’re trying to get it thawed now…it’s just one pipe that runs up the outside wall.
Whee!
On some days, Tim’s weather has been the same or worse. And we’ve had some mighty significant wind chills and low temperatures, here, as well. And we’ve had lots of big snows. Today it was warmer and I pulled out a couple of windows so I could stick shovels out the windows of the second floor and knock off big icicles from the eavestroughs. And we have good attic insulation and ventilation.
You probably already know this: leave open any cupboard doors where the pipe runs through. That way, it doesn’t get so cold in the cupboard and the pipe might not be so apt to freeze up.
Thanks Viv. Disaster has been averted. We used a heating pad and a blow drier from both above and below. I figured out what the problem was too. The pipe runs up the outside wall, and whoever first put it there, put insulation on the inside of the pipe! So it was getting shielded from the warm of the house! Duh! When we finished the ceiling in the basement, we effectively cut off all air to the pipe. That didn’t help either. I’ll keep an eye on it now…
