After successful airport navigation and VERY early morning (3:30), we have arrived in Rome. Its a very cool city — though not temperature wise!
July 15: We arrived in Rome at about 11:00 AM. and made our way to the apartment. Its a fairly cool apartment on a nice little piazza. The first thing tha struck us was how small the streets are, and lined with cafes. The kids had an air conditioned nap while Shel and I went for a brief stroll. We came upon Piazza Navero…only about two block from our place and bought a gellato and wandered in the heat of the day. After coming around a corner, we were confronted by the Pantheon. Its difficult to describe how BIG it is…espesially when you walk around a corner and BOOM there it is. After that, we went back to the room, did some laundry and relaxed a bit, then took the kids for a tour of what we had found (Gellato in hand of course) — we also made it to the Trevi Fountains — but haven’t been back there yet.
July 16: We had a tour booked for this morning, so we had to get up and find a way to get to the Colloseum. The tour actually started in the Forum and worked it’s way back to the Colloseum. Again, the SIZE of things is so impressive. I would have NO idea how to go about building that kind of stuff with modern equipment — never mind without. We just finished lunch after the tour and are heading back to teh room for a respite. That seems to be the way of things. People go in in the afternoon and come back out as it cools off….it’s SO HOT.
Anyway, enough babble for now, everything has gone off according to plan and it’s all been great! Shel did a fantastic job! Certainly in Rome, we’re right in the middle of everything! Very cool. We have about 2000 photos now that I will make each and every one of you sit through while I describe exactly what we did BEFORE and AFTER each shot! Heh heh. Gotta run. See y’all!
Rome !! Whoa…you guys are movin’ !! Easy on the gellato…brainfreeze in 30 deg weather isn’t pleasant! I hope the boys are taking in all the culture Rome has to offer. You’re right, it’s a cool town and we’ve all been talking here, thinking Rome will be the neatest part of your trip. Here’s hoping you can temper it against the other highlights with the sobering thought….. apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh-water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
Enjoy!!
