Kind of interesting day today.
With the G-8 in town and dignitaries coming and going, there was a fair bit to watch. Every now and then a flotilla on helicopters took off taking (I’m told), Chretien, then the Japanese P.M. out to Kananaskis Country. More impressive was the security EVERYWHERE. Our office is right beside the airport, so there were police cars going back and forth all day, along with an unusually high concentration of “Black Suburbans with dark tinted windows”. Gee, wonder what they are?Lots of people climbing our little hill too to try and see the airport. Surprised they weren’t shot!
Later, we sat on our office’s roof and watched “Air Force One” land at the Calgary International Airport. Not really that impressive to see. Just a 747 with “United States of America” decalled on the side. We were hoping there would be an escort of F-18s or something, but they were nowhere to be seen although I’m sure they were nearby. About half an hour later, a convoy of helicopters took off. First three reasonably large helicopters, followed by four smaller “Black Hawk” looking things. Then the three HUGE US Marine helicopters. Really impressive. They are gi-normous!
I really don’t care about seeing the President of the States arrive. It is just impressive, the amount of security and ado that follows him around. The aircraft were pretty cool too. Now we just need to see what a mess the protesters make of the downtown tomorrow. They are having a rally starting at 6:00AM and their aim is to “disrupt business by whatever means possible”. Great. Thankfully I work nowhere near there.
