Renovation and The Squid.

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007 by Ian

Over the next couple of weeks, the basement (where The Squid lives) is getting renovated.  I’ve now moved the server itself into the crawl space along with everything else in the basement, but I can’t guarantee that I will have power to it all the time.  I’ve setup a backup server on our desktop computer just in case, but it’s possible we’ll lose our connection to the internet entirely at times, as it’s all in the same place as The Squid.

So, this is just a heads up that things may be dicey over the next little while.

Last Hottub

We had our last hot tub tonight, then I drained it, turned off it’s hot water tank and now it waits to be demolished. That fun starts NEXT Tuesday! Whee! The kids want to go down and beat the snot out of the walls, but I’d really rather they didn’t. I’m not entirely sure yet what’s staying and what’s going. We’ll have to see as the reno-man demolishes it.

Well Ian is right I’ve been a bit lazy ……

Okay the the firstkey things going on right now are that Leigh and Sam are getting ready for their USA trip. Sam will have 2.5 week and leigh closer to 5 in the US. They are splitting it abut half and half in Claifornia and the North east staying with friends having time in new York Connetticut and San Fransisco and too many other places to mention. They leave at the end of the month.

The second is that I got my glider to “thermal” this weekend, catching actual lift to keep the glider in the air for 20-30 minutes at a time circling up in the lift and then heading for a wee tour before circling up again. I know it sounds silly but its something I’ve wanted to do since I was about 14 … so its nice to actually get it done. Ian i finished off my canterbury Sailplane “arrow” and i’m ready to do some slope soaring the moment the wind blows.

Its been very cold and frost this weekend. Not prairie cold but cold for us.

Short Lived Burst of Enthusiasm!

As I stated earlier, I have everything for the bathroom renovation, tub is in, vanity ready, etc. So, I ripped the soapdish off the wall in a motivational, “Now I have to finish it” move, went to Home Depot to pickup the tub, and guess what?

I’m siliconing the soapdish back in.

George and I got the tub home to find it had been dropped in transit — one corner completely smashed. Sigh. At least I get free delivery when it comes again.

And, that puts off my bathroom renovations for at least two weeks. The new “expected arrival date” is July 1. After the livingroom furnature fiasco, I’m not holding my breath. NOTHING is coming out of that bathroom until I SEE the tub in it’s complete, UNSMASHED, glory.

Damn it.

Slow Web Traffic!

I’ve been lazy and not posting. I know. I know Terry and Viv are in France, so we won’t be hearing from them for the next — what? — 10 days or so? Scott seems to have burnt out on posting, so, I’ll give you a little update.

Today I’m starting to rip out the main bathroom. We have all the parts, new jet tub, vanity, etc., but I still have to demo and re-tile and install. It’ll be a few weeks at least, but hopefully it won’t be fraught with peril!  There WILL be plumbing to do…

We’ve had a friend staying with us for the last couple days (Hi, Nicola!). She just had knee surgery and has been staying with us so she doesn’t have to negotiate her stairs at home. She’s going home today though.

I have been building a remote control plane just like Scott’s (but blue). I haven’t got very far yet — it’s been busy. Some of the electronics are in, but I’m stalled because the next step is a big one.

The kids are winding up their years at school, Dylan only has his 3 exams over the next week, and Quinn has 5 days left.

Basement renovations are starting in a week as well. The hot tub is being jack hammered out, all the walls in the basement are being removed and then rebuilt into a “rumpus room”. It’ll end up being the TV room. We’ll see.
